The landscape in Malaysia has shown a pleasing shift whereby it has became part of our community lifestyle. It complements the national physical development which envision to provide a comfortable, pleasing and safe living environment. However Sustainable landscape needs to be incorporated and balanced the human desire for beautiful and functional landscapes with the imperative to preserve valuable resources.
“The keywords used in defining a sustainable landscape is functional, cost-effective, environment friendly, maintainable and visually attractive to maximize ecological integrity and minimize land degradation”
Landscape is a concept most commonly understood at the local scale. At the regional and national scales, however, landscape has traditionally been important in safeguarding visual scenery: and managing landscape character. Our understanding of landscape has progressed beyond the purely visual, to include ecosystem functions, as well as other natural and human factors. In addition to specific landscape policies at the larger scales, it is also important to recognize landscape contributions to other fields at national and regional policy, most notably those associated with liveability, biodiversity and prosperity.
The Ministry of Housing and Local Government through the National Landscape Department is aware of its role as the steward of the “Sustainable Landscape”. The government plays a very important role to establish the perspective of sustaining the landscape resources in the right manner and in every aspect of development. It is my sincere hope that all government agencies, state governments, non-governmental organizations (NGO) and the public to exercise greater commitments in the effort to put the sustainable landscape in practice.
I wish to congratulate the organizer and hope this seminar will commemorate our enthusiasm and passion towards achieving the objectives- “1Malaysia; Towards A Sustainable Landscape”.
Wishing All Of You A Fruitful And Successful Conference!
